Navigating Autumn Driving Hazards

In this blog entry, our Chicago vehicle recovery and Chicago roadside assistance service team will detail some important tips for safe driving during the Autumn season and how to navigate Autumn driving hazards.

Driving Safety on Slippery Roads

  • Drive more slowly and increase the distance between you and other vehicles to allow for better braking
  • Never suddenly accelerate, brake, or make sharp turns – as much as possible
  • Make sure that your tires are in ideal condition in advance. Tires should have proper tread depth for your terrain, to ensure solid traction

Driving Safely on Fallen Leaves

  • Be careful when driving over areas with fallen leaves, as they can have slippery areas or camouflage potholes
  • Be aware of how leaf piles can reduce visibility around intersections or parked cars
  • Make sure to keep your windshield free from leaves and debris, as this can impact your vision and driving safety

Driving Safety During Changing Autumn Weather

  • Check weather forecasts before embarking on long trips
  • Make sure that your windshield wipers are in good condition and that your defrosting system is working
  • Keep a safe distance between your car and other vehicles, and turn your headlights on when there is reduced visibility outside

Driving Safety Around Autumn Wildlife

  • Pay close attention to any wildlife crossing signs – notably during late evening or early morning hours
  • Slow speed in areas known for lots of wildlife or animal encounters
  • If you see an animal on the road, honk your horn or flash headlights to make them run away

Driving Safely During Earlier Nights

  • Make sure that all of your vehicle’s lights are properly working including tail lights, headlights, and turn signals
  • Use headlights at dusk / dawn and during any sort of inclement weather to improve your visibility and make yourself clear to spot for others
  • Be extra careful when driving during sunset and sunrise, as solar glare can negatively impact vision. We recommend keeping a pair of sunglasses in your car for extra safety.
